Chamber Seeks Photographs for New County View Book

The Chamber of Commerce is producing a new County View book and is looking for photographs that capture the beauty of Sandusky County.

The View Book will contain information on the quality of life from the educational arena, religious affiliations, health services, arts & entertainment, our cultural base, business & industry, agriculture, recreational assets and health care services and includes sections highlighting Clyde, Fremont, Gibsonburg, Woodville and Bellevue. But what really delivers the story are the full-color glossy photographs that line the pages. Any images that help us tell our story are what we need.

Anyone who submits photographs that are selected for use will be listed as a contributing photographer in the publication. And, if you have a photography business you’ll receive a 2 ½ x 4-inch color ad in the publication and copies of the book to show your published work at no charge.

The deadline to submit photographs is April 15, 2007. When submitting photographs please provide a high resolution photo with description, your name, business name, address and phone number.

The Chamber of Commerce of Sandusky County takes great pride in telling others about where we live, work and raise our families. Delivering a positive image, sharing the well rounded characteristics of Sandusky County and promoting our members are what the Chamber does as we introduce others to this community.

Along with delivering a quality image, the Chamber of Commerce strives for a consistency level that stands above the rest. This is why we are producing a new edition of the Sandusky County View Book and would like you to be a part of it through your photography skills and captured images that tell the story of what Sandusky County is all about.

Chamber Awards Four Local Individuals at Annual Dinner

The Chamber of Commerce of Sandusky County held its awards dinner on January 25, 2007 at Crystal Arbors Banquet Hall & Catering in Fremont. During this annual event, the Chamber reviewed activities and special events happening during their 60th Anniversary year. The Chamber also recognized four local individuals for their contributions to Sandusky County.

Sherri Whitt was awarded the Citizen of the Year award for going beyond the call of duty to help oncology patients. While the oncology patients received their treatments, Whitt would voluntarily sit with them and give them hand massages to help take their mind of things. Whitt became a certified breast fitter for Angie’s Boutique and helped those same patients complete a new look for themselves by helping them find the perfect wig, accessories, or skin care product. When a patient was too ill to come to the boutique, Whitt would deliver the items that they needed to their homes. Whitt has been an instrumental part of the Sandusky County Cancer Fund Committee and in the past year helped coach and assist with Special Olympics and baseball at the School of Hope. She is also involved with the Chamber Ambassadors, Clyde BPA, Clyde Exchange, and International Referral Network. Whitt has two children and five grandchildren.

Elmwood Assisted Living Director of Community Relations, s, Barb Mason, was honored with the Clark Ambassador Award. Serving as chairman for several committees, she has demonstrated how to lead successful committees and groups by listening, gathering information and discussing critical decisions. Mason has proven to be an individual that treats her relationship with the community like she treats her friends – always there when you need her. She has been employed with Elmwood for over 10 years and has shown her integrity, honesty & dependability to not only her coworkers but to her residents. It was said that her most impressive characteristic was her willingness to raise her hand to help others, do special projects, and her strong work ethic. In addition to her career, Mason is a member of the Chamber Ambassadors, the Board of Trustees for United Way, Public Relations Committee Advisory Board for First Call for Help and has served on the Sandusky County Alzheimer’s Association. Mason’s husband, Marty, said her best contribution to the community was raising two fine young men and devoting herself to their family.

The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Drs. Al & Gayle Jackson for going above and beyond what other practitioners in their profession or vocation would have normally done. Dr. Al Jackson found a need for healthcare to migrant workers and their families in rural Ohio. He developed a mobile clinic that would travel directly to the fields were they were working in order to provide the workers and their families with healthcare. Along with his wife, Dr. Gayle Jackson, they founded the African-American College Club. The club takes students on tours of colleges around the United States in order to make an informed and education decision regarding which college to attend. Dr. Gayle Jackson also visits the schools weekly to help students develop study habits and help parents see a better future for their children. She also played a significant role in beginning a mentoring program for middle school students and in the after school partnership program with Fremont City Schools and WSOS. Dr. Al Jackson was recently named the new head of the Ohio Health Department by Governor Strickland. The Jackson’s have four adult children.

How do I compare and choose the best group rating plan?
Here are a few tips and some simple questions that can help you make an informed decision.

Who are the Sponsoring Organization and Third Party Administrator?

Very Important! Choose an organization and TPA that are trusted and reputable, and not only provide employers with tremendous discount options, but more importantly will be there to represent your company and manage your claims. One claim that is not successfully managed can impact your group rating status for up to 4 years.

What has been the history of the group discounts for the last two or three years? ------Don’t let a 95% quote or proposal fool you-----

If they are quoting you 95% and they have never performed at that level, then you are gambling with premium savings.

Is membership declining?

Employers may be leaving because of poor group performance.

How long has the group been in existence?

Helps you to avoid being selected for a start up group that may not form or may have poor performing discounts.

How many members do they currently have in the plan?

The larger the group, the more stable it is and the greater the possibility that the estimate will be reality.

What is the cost of the membership to join the sponsoring organization?

Premium savings can be lost if membership dues are too high.

What information is being used in your quotes? Here are some other factors to consider:

Payroll: If the proposal estimates or rounds up payroll, the estimated savings could be inflated.

Individual Rates vs. Base Rates: Some proposals may not be calculated using an employer’s individual rate, but rather base rates. For a more accurate picture of premium savings, compare your individual rate with the group rate.

BWC Assessments: Make sure BWC “add on costs” such as administrative costs, non-group discount factor, and disabled workers’ relief fund costs are included in the calculation. If not included, estimated premiums will be understated.

The answers to these questions will enable you to make a more informed decision that will result in maximizing the premium discount for your business. For more information on workers’ compensation group rating, please feel free to contact our office or CompManagement’s Group Rating Department at 800-825-6755 for a free, no- obligation comparison.

  New Insurance Plan
Small businesses have typically had to pay more for health insurance than larger companies, but there is a new plan available that may lower premiums for Chamber member businesses, regardless of their size.
The Community Health Plan Alliance (CHPA) sponsored by the Chamber, Memorial Hospital and SummaCare, is offering the plan to all Chamber members.
Premiums were higher for small businesses in the past because of higher risk--in a small group, one catastrophic case could quickly become costly to the insurance carrier. CHPA applies the concept of group purchasing to health insurance premiums, providing an opportunity for smaller businesses to pool some of their risk and lower their premiums.
Over 98% of area physicians are participating in the plan and the customer service office is locally based at Memorial Hospital. To find out more about the plan, call the Alliance office at 419-334-6653.
